Membership Categories

Fellow:  A physician in good standing in the American Academy of Pediatrics residing in South Carolina, including members of the Armed Services who are assigned to military bases in South Carolina.

Specialty Fellow:  A physician who is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics who has adequate training and continuing activity in the field in which he is specializing, a valid license to practice medicine and certification by the appropriate Specialty Board, resident training to the level of Specialty Board eligibility or the equivalent, or the equivalent of two years specialized training in the candidate’s field in a pediatric center.  He/she must fulfill the requirements of the particular section of the Academy.

Member:  A physician, not a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, but practicing exclusively in the field of pediatrics in South Carolina, including members of the Armed Services who are assigned to military bases in South Carolina.  He/she must have a minimum of one year’s specialty training.

Honorary:  The Chapter may elect distinguished physicians who have made outstanding contributions to pediatrics, whose name has been presented by a qualified member.  Election shall be by three-fourths vote of the Fellow and members present.

Emeritus:  1)Any South Carolina Chapter member having attained the age of 65 years may, at his/her request, transfer to Emeritus status.  2) Having been a member in good standing of the American Academy of Pediatrics and a resident of South Carolina, upon the age of 65, an individual may apply for Emeritus status in the Chapter.

Junior Fellows:  Applicants for Junior Fellow membership must be a graduate of a    medical school acceptable to the Executive Committee and have entered or completed specialty training which may lead to certification.

Inactive Member:  Any member of this Chapter who has ceased to engage in the practice of medicine due to ill health or retirement, or any other due cause, shall be eligible for transfer to Inactive Membership upon filing an application with the Secretary of the Chapter, who shall refer the application to the Executive Committee for approval.

Affiliate Member:  Nurse practitioners and physician assistants may be eligible for consideration for Affiliate Membership who meet the following qualifications:
1) Certification by his/her South Carolina professional organization and a statement of good standing in that organization.  2) Licensure by the State of South Carolina.  3) Recommendation for membership signed by two physician members of the South Carolina Chapter of the AAP.  4) Agreement by the Chapter’s Executive Committee that the goals and objectives of the applicant’s professional organization are consistent with those of the South Carolina Chapter of the AAP as stated in Article II. Upon receipt of the application for Affiliate Membership by the Secretary of the Chapter, the application will be submitted to the Executive Committee for approval and subsequent circulation to the Chapter’s membership to be voted upon for acceptance (like procedure for Fellows and other members).

Student Member:  Medical students may be eligible for consideration for membership who merits the following qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled and in good academic standing at USC School of Medicine or Medical University of South Carolina;
  • Has expressed interest in the specialty area of pediatrics; and
  • Understands and agrees with the objectives of the Chapter.
